From attending City Council meetings, to reviving the Shoreview-Parkside Neighborhood Association, to leading Flood Free San Mateo, to serving on the Neighborhood Watch Board, I have always believed in real and constant community engagement. I hope to keep you in the loop about the issues that matter most to us!
As more San Mateo residents learn about this project, their concerns are piling up. While the State of California can proceed with or without community support, I believe it is critical for the community to be heard. Along with other leaders, I am asking State officials about the long-term effectiveness of highway widening projects and whether more can be done to promote alternative solutions like expanded access to public transportation. If you have concerns with this project, please write to me at danielleforsanmateo@gmail.com!
Since leading passage of the Community Flood and Stormwater Initiative, I’m happy to report the City of San Mateo is actively pursuing permits to dredge the south end of the lagoon. Additionally, the Flood Free San Mateo Coalition is working with State, Federal and private grant agencies to further accelerate improvement projects. I'm proud of the work that our Coalition achieved, and I'm grateful to Mayor Nash for recognizing us with the Mayor's Hero Award!
Across the City of San Mateo, up to seven (7) community centers, pools and senior centers are currently at risk of permanent closure. Our pools need $20 million in investment to remain open, and our community centers need $32 million to stay up to code. I am working with local leaders to explore how we can secure dedicated, sustainable funding. Like our community pools and community centers, Central Park requires an estimated $65 million in repairs and upgrades to remain a safe and vibrant recreational area for all city residents. I am working with our Department of Parks and Recreation to understand both their short- and long-term needs and explore how we can secure dedicated, sustainable funding.
I support the mission of Vision Zero, which aims to eliminate pedestrian and bicycle fatalities in San Mateo, starting with intersections around our schools. I am currently working with the City of San Mateo and the San Mateo Unified School District to implement a pilot “Orange Flag Brigade” program around several local schools.
